Funding will support community resilience in post-disaster recovery efforts.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) plans to invest in watershed infrastructure projects to aid in community recovery from natural disasters and improve preparedness. A total of $265 million will be distributed through the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) for 28 Emergency Watershed Protection projects in 16 states affected by extreme weather events.
These initiatives—including streambank stabilization, flood prevention, and watershed restoration—are part of a wider $925 million funding through the 2023 Consolidated Appropriations Act.
Secretary Tom Vilsack stated, “Programs like Emergency Watershed Protection can help communities with recovery efforts and this historic investment, in tandem with the floodplain buyouts opportunity through Bipartisan Infrastructure Law investments, provides relief to communities impacted by natural disasters.“
